Description :The times in which we live are manageable. We don’t have to sell our souls, hock our children, or commit a crime to survive. God is in control. But hard times lead to idolatry – image worship or divine honor paid to any created object. From Exodus 20:3-6, Bishop McLaughlin reminded us that God is jealous and hates idolatry. He doesn’t want us to turn to cheap imitations for help and confuse the blessing with the Blesser. When Moses ascended Mount Sinai to meet with God, the people grew impatient and fashioned a golden calf to worship. Then God sent fiery serpents to bite and kill many of them. Yet in this apparent devastation, He had mercy on them and commanded Moses to form a brass serpent (representing the cross of Calvary) and directed the people to look to it and live. But even this symbol of God’s mercy was later turned into an object of worship and had to be destroyed. Though times are hard, and things are slow, we cannot allow the people or the things that God uses to bless us become our God!!!
